Yichun Liu studied at the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing before completing her MA at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp.
Her work looks at how subtle shifts in construction can change the way a familiar form is read.
DEPARTURE FROM THE NORM
CYCHUNYI grew out of Departure From The Norm, Liu’s graduate collection in Antwerp. Reversed soles, twisted uppers and displaced proportions introduced a design language that continues through the brand today.

CYCHUNYI starts with established footwear codes and takes them slightly off course.
A sole comes into view. An upper twists. A heel folds back on itself.
Familiar, but never quite where you expect it.
MADE BY HAND
Each pair moves through repeated stages of lasting, shaping and finishing. Produced in small quantities, every form is refined by hand until it sits as intended.
